Hi! I'm Tae Baker-Hattery. I am the owner, sewist, founder, and face of Wednesday Workshop. I am a Black, queer, disabled, single mom of three kids, two of who are also disabled.
Growing up, my mom was a quilter and seamstress and I picked the craft up from a young age, never doing anything serious with it but always coming back to it in some way.
I originally went to college for video game design, 3D graphics and animation. But just before graduation, my then-husband and I experienced the incredible loss of our first child, Link. With this, I left behind my career, my interests, my good health and my sense of self.
Long story short, the next decade was filled with a lot: more children, illness, divorce, PTSD and a fucking pandemic. In that time, I slowly came back to being creative again, to sewing and listening and consuming the old media and part of myself I left behind.
My oldest child is autistic (she gets it from her mama~) and had a lot of sensory issues, so i began to make her clothing. That turned into clothing for my friends and their kids, and myself, and eventually a full blown business. When the pandemic happened, I made and donated thousands of masks, sharpening my skills in woven and non-stretch fabrics.
I started on bags out of desperation to find myself the perfect personal bag for me - a journey which still continues as I've made (and consequently sold) half a dozen bags for myself that just aren't Quite Right.
Now I make bags, everyday essentials, mobility aid accessories and more. I love my job and am proud of how I've made the best of the shittiest situation I could imagine.
